Postive Energy Only, Please

I have been reading the various blogs around the internet concerning the Miami Maternity Center and Shari Daniels.

It saddens me to understand how much hatred there is out there by her own community- a community of women and others that have committed their lives to other women and families.

It seems a wasteful use of energy to condemn another person outside the legal system. It seems even more wasteful to hear others relish the hard times of another human being.

So. I thought I'd start a blog about the positives that surround MMC and its Director.

PLEASE- anyone on this site that feels lead to write anything negative, hurtful, gossip- driven... go to the other sites. Leave this one alone.

  2. I am so glad you are doing this, after having all three of my little ones with Shari, there is nothing that could convince me that she is in the wrong of anything. Let me know how I can help, and I am going to start my own blog as well. Love me and the babies.

  3. I visited the MMC at 26 weeks pregnant with a dream of delivering my baby VBAC. I took a tour of the MMC and talked to Dahlia and Shari. At the end of my visit I was sure that I would deliver my baby at the MMC and had renewed hope that is was possible for me to have a natural birth. Seventeen weeks later, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy (9 lbs. 13 oz.) with no tears. My birth was a life changing experience. Words fall short of expressing my deep gratitude to Shari and the staff of the MMC for their hard work and dedication to making my VBAC a success.

  5. Wonderful news, though she still has info on there AND she misstaes (in y opinion) why the blog was taken down... Oh well, she wasn't exactly truthful when the blog was up, so why expect her to be truthful now...

  6. I would like to show my support for the MMC. I am currently a VBAC client of MMC and looking forward to delivering my child under the care of Shari and her wonderful staff! We are a military family and my husband and I discussed coming back to the MMC for all our future births. I am convinced these are the best midwives & birthing center in the Nation! Thank you to Shari, her staff and all the wonderful caring students she is molding into future midwives. My prayers and support are with you all. God bless you and the selfless service you dedicated to!

  7. Here is a copy of a letter I am sending to Governor Crist, in support of birthing centers across the state of FL. Please also show your support by writing him.

Re: Legislation pertaining to Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) deliveries in birth centers

    Dear Governor Crist,

I am writing to urge your support to keep and protect midwifery in birthing centers in the state of Florida, especially in regards to vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). I am a woman currently on active duty military status and was fortunate to come across the birthing center option offered here in South Florida at the Miami Maternity Center. I am a healthy woman and considered a low-risk pregnancy even though I am seeking a VBAC. A healthy and natural vaginal delivery is so important to me (especially after experiencing a cesarean section with my first child) that I chose to pay out-of-pocket cost even though the military health care insurance TRICARE refused to pick up the “low” cost of the birthing center option. The health benefits of having a natural delivery far outweigh those of a cesarean section, which I feel many doctors and hospital unnecessarily push on women.

First I should say that you should be proud of the state of Florida for making birthing centers a healthy option for women to give birth. Women who are pregnant are not “sick” or “ill” and do not belong in hospitals. I like the way it was put in the article from Los Angeles Times (see enclosed) “Midwives should be caring for the majority of pregnant women, and physicians should continue to handle high-risk cases, complications and emergencies.” In other words unless a woman is considered high-risk there is no need for her to be in the “hospital” and healthy women should have the choice to birth in a birthing center verses a hospital.

Up until the first week in February 2009 the Miami Maternity Center was part of a study that allowed them to deliver and care for VBAC clients. Since the study supposedly ended the birthing center is forced to seek other alternatives to offer their VBAC clients, meaning they will not be able to birth at the birthing center. Eliminating the option of a healthy vaginal delivery for mothers determined to do so, could possibly pose more risk to the mother and baby… since the mother is left with only two options. She could either have a homebirth carrying the risk that the mother’s home is not near a hospital (in the case of a true emergency). The other option, which is could be very dangerous is an unattended birth. Being a mother who had a previous cesarean section, I personally would do everything in my power not to have to undergo major surgery again, especially if it is not medically necessary.

Please allow me to explain, first hand, the exceptional care given by the midwives at the Miami Maternity Center. The cost of a birthing center birth is thousands of dollars cheaper than that of a hospital birth. Midwives are very personable with the mothers-to-be (which is not always the case by doctors), these midwives are skilled and experienced in woman care, labor and delivery; delivering hundreds of babies a year without complication. Specifically the Miami Maternity Center has the lowest emergency transfer rate to hospitals in the entire country; they are also world renowned! Women flock to South Florida from all over the world to deliver their babies under the care of the midwives at the Miami Maternity Center – don’t you think this is something special you should protect with all your heart? All you have to do is walk inside the birthing center and look at the walls… you will see hundreds and hundreds of pictures of parents and their newborn babies, all delivered at the Miami Maternity Center. Ask any mother who delivered under the care of a midwife at the Miami Maternity Center if she had a positive healthy experience, you will undoubtedly get “yes!” as your answer.

As the governor of Florida, I think you have the perfect opportunity to intervene on behalf of all women seeking a healthy alternative to “the knife”. Surgery should not be the only option for VBAC candidates when statically it has been shown that VBAC is safer for a low-risk mother than a cesarean section surgery and the recovery is much quicker. I had an OBGYN doctor (in South Florida) during my research quote me that “the chances of me having a repeat cesarean were the same for another mother who had a vaginal delivery… with a 40 percent chance at a vaginal birth”… You may be shaking your head “what!” That was my reaction. What is wrong with the doctors in the state of Florida opting women to surgery quicker than the blink of the eye - for what? This is why it is so important for you to act quickly and support the birthing centers to perform VBAC deliveries in the state of Florida.

I never thought in the United States of America, the land of the free, I would ever be forced into unnecessary surgery because of a “law” that did not allow VBAC to be performed… What is becoming of America? Where abortion is on the verge of becoming a woman’s “right” but having a vaginal healthy birth is becoming a crime? We (the women in America) need you to support birthing centers in the state of Florida.

I also included an article written in the Los Angeles Times Newspaper, which I think might shed more light on the importance of birthing centers and midwifery in general. Please show your support now – there is no time to waste.

    Sincerely,
    A Concerned Citizen

  8. We need to band together and demand our civil rights back. Shari is only one person but if EVERY ONE of her mom's and their family members stood up and said we are not going to take it anymore, people would have to listen. We need to drive internet traffic to sites like this...How about submitting our birth stories. People like to read them and it will help rate the blog higher on a Google search. Also, if we have consistent blog entries, that will help as well.
Let's not be those good people who sat around and did nothing!

  10. Shari is AMAZING!!!! who wouldnt want there child delivered by a woman who has delivered 11,000 beautiful healthy babies(and counting) in her lifetime! I dunno about everyone else.. but I only want the best for my kids.. and in my opinion the best is Shari Daniels and the Miami Maternity Center!
And half the people out there who are bloging hateful things about MMC.. are all getting there info from 1 woman who used to work there.. who has decided to TRY and make Shari's life miserable.. by writing false information about MMC just to get Shari in trouble.. why do you think that every time the inspectors come.. they find NOTHING.. cuz its a load of crap! Just because she had a bad experience in West Palm Beach with another midwife.. who btw wasnt even licensed.. (and had nothing to do with Shari)is besides the point.. I think she should get help and move on with her life.. and stop trying to get other people in trouble..
thousands of women walk through Shari's door every year.. and love the experince.. i dont think she should punish all those women who need Shari to help them.. just because shes upset with Shari..what happened had nothing to do with her!
I reccommmend MMC to anyone and everyone! I love Shari and cant wait to deliver there in May!

  11. I love Shari and all the midwives at MMC! I would have had a c-section for sure, for many different reasons, if not for the kind support of the midwives at MMC! The birth of my daughter was the highlight of my life -- all natural, peaceful, healthy, empowering and safe! This witch hunt for Shari could not be directed at a more loving person devoted to giving babies and mothers the peaceful, natural birth God intended us to have. She is an oasis from the hospital/OB-GYN scene of slicing everyone open. I have a million miles of gratitude for MMC and Shari and hope all this drama ends soon so she can get back to the business of helping moms and babies.

  12. Tomorrow May 5th is International Midwives Day. Please honor midwifery students on this special day by sponsoring a midwifery student at MMC. Your donation will be applied toward their monthly lab fees. Call or stop by the MMC to make a donation. Lets not forget the women who supported us during our births....their education is important!!

  13. Is anyone here skilled in SEO optimization? It would drive more traffic here (and kick this up to the top of the list in google) if the coding were reworked..

In addition, if we all linked to this blog, it should start to allow it to creep up in the ratings on google too and hopefully show up above the hurtful sites currently on there.

    Hope this helps..You people rock!!

  14. I am so happy to see a group of women such as this. I live in Ohio and expecting my forth child. Shari delivered my first child 7 years ago and my third 3 years ago. My second child was delivered at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. He was the first water birth they had ever experienced. I used what Shari had taught me and my own experiences and had a great birth. I did have many "interested" hospital staff peeking in in disbelief and had to sto the nurses a few times from wanting to give me meds and IV drugs. This baby, due in April, will be a home birth assisted by a midwife. I so wish I could make it back to Miami for his birth. I have never been so comfortable and confident in my care givers as I was while in the company of the MMC staff. They are an amazing group of people and in my experience the most educated and experienced in women's care.

  15. I have just recently read all about Shari Daniels situation with the center, I don't know the scope of responsability that she has; If she is tottaly inocent she will know exactly what to do.
I the other hand I do believe she is a very professional person! I have faith that she is doing things right, if she has to be investigated, well SO WHAT?!!!! is she has nothing to hide there is nothing to find. And as far as I know she's been found inocent in all this mess.
I personally would love to get in touch with her; so if somebody can help me with that I will be gratefull hehehehe!!! :D
